Sweden PR & Settlement.

Best understood as a lawful work-and-residence progression—not as an instant direct-PR programme.

Core worker-to-PR pathway

For a worker applying for permanent residence through the employment route, the Swedish Migration Agency states that the applicant must generally have had a work permit and worked in Sweden for four of the past seven years, while meeting the relevant permit conditions.

Other important PR requirements

  • Be able to support yourself financially through qualifying, sustainable income.
  • Have complied with the conditions of the work permits during the qualifying period.
  • Meet the conduct / “well-behaved life” requirement that applies to permanent residence assessment.
  • Apply for permanent residence in connection with the relevant extension application.

A realistic progression model

1

Study or Qualifying Entry

Enter through an eligible study, job-search, work or other lawful residence route.

2

Qualifying Work

Move into and maintain a compliant work-permit / qualifying employment history.

3

Permanent Residence

Apply when the qualifying residence/work history and the other PR requirements are satisfied.

No guarantee: Four years of work does not mean automatic PR. The Swedish Migration Agency still checks work-permit compliance, financial self-support, conduct and the requirements that apply when the PR application is decided.
